By now I'm sure anyone reading this has heard about Helene, and the devastation she brought to western NC. What I don't think folks outside this area can really understand, though, is how vast the impact of this storm not only was....but IS, and WILL BE. The effects on the landscape will last for generations. And the changes to the hearts & minds of the community are permanent. However tough this experience has been, and will be, there is also some good coming from it. While many bonds & connections were shattered by the raging waters, many new ones were formed. Relief workers from all over North America rushed to our aid, and were stunned by the manner in which locals had already pulled together to help each other. Frankly, I think we even surprised ourselves. It has been a privilege to be a part of that effort. The road to recovery ahead is long, and will be steep & difficult at times. But make no mistake, the resolve of the people is far stronger than any flood will EVER be. And just like the mythological Phoenix, rising from destruction to fly again stronger than ever, we too will be back.
